Living Independently

People with disabilities can live independently! You can decide how to live, work and participate in your community. However, living independently does not mean doing everything by yourself or living in isolation; instead, it means having the same choices in your every-day life that your non-disabled peers have. This can be making informed choices to participate in all aspects of society, with the help of any needed support.

There are a broad range of programs and services that support adults with special needs and their families right here in Southern New Jersey.  Residential and Support Services can include Alternative Living Units (ALUs) which provide supervised housing services to adults with developmental disabilities and Community Supported Living Services (CSLA) to help individuals with disabilities who are living independently in the community.

The New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities provides funding for programs that assist New Jersey adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (age 21 and older) to live as independently as possible. Services and supports are available in and around your county from independent providers. Below are just a few of the options for programs that cover Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties.

  1. The Arc of Burlington County
  2. The Arc of Camden County
  3. Delaware House
  4. Gloucester County Division of Disability Services

Know that you have a choice in selecting a program that best fits your individual needs and desires. To exercise that right, please feel free to navigate the Southern New Jersey JAA web directory or contact the Resource Navigator.

The U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has developed a toolkit for families and youth titled, Making the Move to Managing Your Own Personal Assistance Services. This toolkit was created to assist transition-age youth with significant disabilities, as well as their family and friends, to navigate the world of PAS including transitioning to work, college, and living on their own.

In addition, Aleph Home Care provides services for every aspect of the life cycle for individuals and their families including respite care and serves Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester Counties. The Aleph Home Care staff is dedicated to providing a high-quality, safe environment that allows you or your loved one to receive care in their own home.  Aleph Home Care allows for peace of mind for many Southern New Jersey families.
